From the Oklahoma City and Boston Marathon bombings to the recent attack on the US Capitol, there is a growing concern about the rising threat of domestic terrorism/extremism in the United States. Motivated by political, racial, ethnic, economic, health, and other grievances, cases of domestic terrorism/extremism are on the rise.
This program will feature BC Professor Peter Krause and former US Attorney Carmen Ortiz. Krause will address the origin and dynamics of terrorism: what factors lead people to become interested in and join extremist groups, as well as the conditions that lead to extremist affiliation and violence. Ortiz will share her experience and expertise in prosecuting domestic terrorism/extremism cases as a United States attorney, speak to the current spread of extremism and the legal challenges related to prosecuting these kinds of cases.
